EMERGENCY PET CARE

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY DOG DOESN'T EAT?

Most pets settle into a routine quickly and look forward to mealtimes. We rarely have pets who refuse to eat. If some animals don't eat immediately, it could be stress related and they will usually begin to eat as they become accustomed to the daily routine. In those rare cases of non-eaters, we rely on foods that help trigger the appetite: a few spoonfuls of canned dog food on top of the dry; a little jar of baby food chicken or turkey; some cottage cheese; some type of liquid enticement such as tuna juice over the food; or smaller, more frequent meals that include favorite treats. Sometimes even a more human meal such as macaroni and cheese or a baked potato will trigger the desire to eat. However, should this behavior persist, our vet would be consulted.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY PET GETS SICK?

When you first come to the kennel you complete a boarder information card. Part of the required information is the name of your vet and any previous medical history. If your pet becomes sick while boarding, he/she would see a vet immediately. Since we want your pet to have the best possible care, we use the vet who treats my own pets. He is close to me and is always on call. His name is Dr. Evan Feinberg of the Stevenson Village Vet Center. If your pet's illness was related to a previously existing condition, then he would contact your vet for input and advice on the situation.

WILL YOU CALL ME IF MY PET BECOMES SICK OR DOES NOT SETTLE IN TO THE KENNEL?

Yes, if you wish me to contact you, and if it's possible, I will call you. When you leave your pet you can leave an emergency phone number. This number may be where you are staying or it could be the local number of a friend or relative who would be willing to be responsible for your pet or would know how or where to contact you.
